St Wolfgang - 27km Race - Sunday 15th October

St Wolfgang

This 27km race takes part in the wonderful Austrian countryside.  It is a single lap of the large lake starting and finishing in the centre of St Wolfgang.  It takes in all the small villages around the edge of the lake as well as a mountain at 3k.  Other than the mountain the course is pretty much flat.  The race website can be found here.  It is all in German, but the site to apply and pay for entry can be switched to English so you get your details entered correctly.  Click this link to go directly to the race entry site.

Andrea Williamson and Mark Pocock did the race in 2006 and are going back again to do it this year.  We liked it so much that we thought some of Eastleigh members may like to do it as well.  If you want any more information then feel free to ask us at the club or email us email Andrea email Mark

There are lots of Guest Houses and Hotels to stay at in St Wolfgang itself.  This makes the walk down to the race first thing very quick and pre race preparation very relaxing.  It is also a bonus for afterwards as you don't have far to go to get a proper shower and have a lie down if you feel you need it.  The location is great for a short weekend break.  You can easily get to Salzburg for the day or just go walking or cycling (there are several routes going from St Wolfgang) in the mountains.

When we went we stayed at the Hotel Furian.  It doesn't have its own website but contact details and reviews can be found on the skiing holiday sites such as here, here and here.  There are some tripadvisor reviews too here.

There are also some very nice restaurants and lots of bars where you can enjoy a Stiegl beer!  All are within a few minutes walk of every hotel.  The people were really friendly too.  For those of you not so comfortable with German many places had menus in English or the staff spoke very good English, or both.

To travel direct you need to fly from London Stansted (STN) to Salzburg (SZG) with Ryanair and then make the short drive (or use public transport) to St Wolfgang.  You can also go with Air Austria but that requires a change at Vienna.
